An 18th century term for hemp fiber that has had "hurds" or "shives" removed but has not been combed is called a "hand of hemp" or "undressed stuff". This hemp fiber has been farm field cut and baled. It was left for over three years baled and then brought to a hemp processing facility where it was opened and left in long lines of fiber; not cut up. It is ready for you to take the fiber bundle further by hackle, comb, spin, twist or card into your choice of fiber, ropes, and yarns.
